Laying the foundation for sustainability
The European Union estimates that 80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined before manufacturing even begins. This underscores the importance of making the right decisions early in the process—through design, material selection, procurement, and production.
– One of the main challenges is to establish a digital chain where information flows smoothly between companies and their suppliers. Traceability is key—without it, meeting the increasing requirements will be difficult, says Jörgen Ekblad, COO at QCM and lead of one of the demonstrators within SwePass, where companies collaborate to test and implement Digital Product Passports (DPPs) in real-world applications.
Insights from the sustainability breakfast seminar
At the latest Sustainability Breakfast Seminar in Gothenburg on February 26, ESPR and DPPs were in focus, highlighting how they will transform the way companies manage product information. Participants, including experts from PDSVISION, QCM, and Richard Nilsson, founder of Fortinio AB and former Global Requirement Manager at Inter IKEA Group, explored how PLM, requirements management, and the digital thread can support compliance with these evolving regulations.
SwePass and QCM: Driving the transition
SwePass plays a key role in helping businesses navigate this transition. A Digital Product Passport is just the visible tip of the iceberg—the real challenge lies in building the structures and systems necessary to collect, manage, and utilize product data effectively. Material data, from theoretical choices during design to actual data after production, is critical in this process.
– How do we ensure the right data is collected? How do we manage requirements from different markets? How can companies leverage digitalization rather than see it as a burden? These are questions we at QCM work with every day, says Jörgen Ekblad.
Upcoming Webinar: Sustainability beyond compliance
The Sustainability beyond compliance webinar on March 26 will explore how Digital Product Passports (DPPs) enhance product traceability, sustainability, and regulatory compliance. Experts from Aras and QCM will discuss how businesses can leverage PLM systems to integrate DPPs effectively, streamline compliance, and drive innovation. More details here.
