Values of a common language, construction industry

Digital infrastructure and standardized data models

WP7 in SwePass showcases the potential of a shared digital infrastructure and standardized data models to create value in the construction industry. By applying the principles of semantic interoperability and traceability developed in WP5, this work package explores how standardized data sharing can enhance circular practices, improve material flows, and facilitate new business opportunities.

The construction sector, with its vast and complex value chains, stands to benefit significantly from a common language for data exchange. WP7 focuses on demonstrating how digital infrastructure and ontologies can enable high-quality recycling, reuse of materials, and the creation of transparent Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Digital Product Passports (DPPs).

Activities and Deliverables:

  1. Data Collection Tools:
    • Develop a mobile application to collect data on construction materials like flat glass, enabling detailed analysis of recycling and reuse pathways.
    • Ensure the tool aligns with ontology-based rules to determine the appropriate material flow—recycling, downgrade, landfill, or reuse.
  2. Digital Infrastructure Integration:
    • Use the platform developed in WP5 to create DPPs and EPDs for construction materials such as flat glass and plastic pipes.
    • Demonstrate how the digital infrastructure supports seamless data integration and enables quality assurance in circular value chains.
  3. Method Development and Validation:
    • Create general methodologies for building applications and data representations based on digital infrastructure and ontologies.
    • Validate these methods through practical demonstrations, ensuring scalability and applicability to other industries.
  4. Knowledge Dissemination:
    • Publish findings and insights from the demonstrations to highlight the added value of standardized data sharing.
    • Provide guidance on how to extend these methods to other sectors and enhance cross-industry collaboration.

WP7 highlights the transformative potential of semantic interoperability in scaling circular economy practices. By demonstrating the practical benefits of a common digital language, this work package not only supports sustainable construction but also paves the way for broader industry adoption of standardized traceability solutions. WP7 reinforces SwePass’s mission to position Sweden as a leader in sustainable innovation and digitalization.
