Traceability of product data through the product lifecycle
Exploring Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools
WP8 in SwePass focuses on showcasing how Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools can enhance traceability and data management throughout a product’s lifecycle, supporting sustainable business practices and compliance with emerging regulations. By integrating PLM systems with Digital Product Passports (DPPs), this work package aims to demonstrate how digitalization can streamline operations, improve data transparency, and foster circular economy practices.
This work package emphasizes the concept of the “digital thread,” which enables the continuous traceability of information across all stages of a product’s lifecycle—from initial design and production to use, maintenance, and eventual recycling or disposal. WP8 addresses the critical role of PLM tools in managing these data flows while ensuring interoperability across stakeholders and systems.
- System configuration:
- Configure the Aras Innovator PLM tool to align with the requirements of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and other relevant standards.
- Establish an information model within the PLM tool to support data traceability and secure information sharing.
- Integration with DPP tools:
- Integrate the PLM system with a DPP tool to demonstrate the seamless flow of product data from design requirements to DPP documentation.
- Highlight how this integration supports compliance, sustainability reporting, and operational efficiency.
- Demonstration of use cases:
- Pilot the PLM and DPP integration in real-world scenarios to validate its functionality and impact.
- Focus on tracking and managing product data across the value chain, particularly in complex supply chain environments.
- Guidelines and standards:
- Develop standards, concepts, and guidelines for PLM implementation in alignment with traceability and circularity goals.
- Provide detailed recommendations for businesses on how to leverage PLM tools to enhance their sustainability and competitiveness.
- Knowledge dissemination:
- Share findings through reports, presentations, and workshops to promote understanding of PLM’s role in traceability and circular economy practices.
- Engage with stakeholders to ensure broad applicability of the tools and methodologies developed in WP8.
WP8 illustrates the significant benefits of integrating PLM tools with DPPs for improving product traceability and lifecycle management. By enabling businesses to track, manage, and report product data more effectively, WP8 supports the broader goals of SwePass to enhance sustainability, regulatory compliance, and innovation. The work package also demonstrates the potential for scaling these solutions to other industries, reinforcing Sweden’s position as a leader in digitalization and sustainable development.
Through its focus on interoperability, transparency, and lifecycle management, WP8 paves the way for more resilient and resource-efficient value chains, contributing to the circular economy and the achievement of long-term sustainability goals.
